Tennessee Sheriff’s Office Selects New Solution to Increase the Ease, Speed, and Accuracy of Capturing Crime Scene Data
Lieutenant Gabe Mullinax is the head of the Forensic Services Unit at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in Knoxville, Tennessee. He has worked in homicide, forensic mapping, and crash reconstruction for over 18 years.

Most recently, he had been using the FARO® FocusS 70 and was achieving highly accurate results. However, sometimes he and his team members had to do overlapping scans to capture the smaller, more intricate details for objects within a highly confined space.
When the FARO® Freestyle 2 Handheld Scanner was released this past summer, his unit implemented it immediately as a companion to the FocusS.
With the Freestyle 2, Lieutenant Mullinax and his team can document even the most complex scenes, ranging from car crashes to multi-site homicide scenes, in one comprehensive scan. It enables them to capture every angle within very tight spaces to paint a more complete, functional picture of the scene for the jury. Moreover, they can do this while significantly reducing the amount of time they spend on any individual scene.
We sat down with Lieutenant Mullinax to discuss his first impressions about the Freestyle 2.
Tell us about getting started.
“I was a first time user so I didn't know what to expect but was easily able to see exactly what I needed to do as far as spending more time in a certain position or if I was going too slowly. And if you get too close to what you're scanning, it vibrates and lets you know, ‘Hey, back off just a little bit.’ So as far as ease, it is very cop friendly.”
How long did it take to complete the scan?
“We had an accident, we had the vehicles, and this was a pretty big scene – high profile for our community. It was a police pursuit that involved a fatality with a midsize SUV. I'd never had my hands on the device before but very quickly used the intuitive device to scan the SUV in about four minutes.”
Which specific features stood out?
“One of the things I found amazing and user friendly was the real-time visualization feature. The fact that you can see exactly what you’re doing in real-time.”
What did you think about the design?
“The PC itself is not in your way. It's on your side, so it's something that law enforcement is comfortable with because most of our gear is stabilized somehow around our waist. And the device itself is very lightweight.”
Has the design had any impact on the speed of your team on-scene?
“My guys are able to use it and still be agile. They can move around a vehicle or a scene and not have to worry about the PC moving, so all things considered, it really helps us keep within our time restraints for what we have to do.”
